ChatGPT for the iPhone 101: beginner’s guide

ChatGPT is a chatbot powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that lets you chat with your computer using natural language to make search queries. Searching “how to bake a cake” on Google, gives you a list of different websites with cake recipes. When you type the same question in ChatGPT, the AI will give you step-by-step instructions on how to bake a cake. So it feels like you’re talking to a real person and not a search engine.

In this article, we are going to go through how to download the official ChatGPT app and use it on your iPhone. Before you start using it though, we recommend you take some time to understand what to use ChatGPT for.

Downloading the right app

To get started, go to the App Store and search for ChatGPT. There are a lot of apps that look like ChatGPT on App Store, to make sure you’re downloading the official one, you need to check that the developer is OpenAI.

Open the app when it finishes downloading to signup using three options:

  • Continue with Apple
  • Continue with Google
  • Sign up with email. Once you have signed up, the app asks you a bit about yourself and you have to verify your phone number.

Or you can Log in if you already have an account, which is what I’ll do. After reading the warnings, you can Continue.

Using ChatGPT

You can now ask ChatGPT anything you want to start chatting in real time > tap the up-facing arrow to send the message. ChatGPT then responds to your question. You can continue asking more questions to get as much information as you need.

You can stop ChatGPT from responding, to interject the AI’s response.

Long-pressing a response gives you options to:

  • Copy
  • Select Text if you want to Translate or Share it.
  • Regenerate Response if you’re not happy with the one the app gives you.
  • Mark the response as Good Response or Bad Response.

Instead of typing, tap the audio wave icon to voice your question. When you stop the recording, the app converts it to the text that you will forward to ChatGPT.

Settings

The three dots icon, (top right corner of the app) lets you do the following:

  • Rename or Delete the chat.
  • View the History of all the chats in your account.
  • Search helps you quickly find what you’re looking for in your search history. Long-pressing a chat in your history lets you Rename or Delete it.
  • Tap a chat history to continue with the chat.
  • Settings contain your account information on:
    • Subscription and upgrades: ChatGPT Plus costs $19.99 per month.
    • Data Controls enables and disables several features (Chat History & Training, Clear chat history, Export Data) and even has the option to delete the account.
  • New chat leaves the current chat to start a new one.
